Sewer Line Replacement Knowledge Base

Sewer line replacement/repacking trench? We recently replaced our sewer line and are left with a 2-3 foot high mountain range of dirt in our front yard. Will this go away with settling or do we need to have our plumbers pack it down more before we pay them? The trench was roughly 10 foot deep and the contract said they would smooth it to ground level and mound for settling. Is 2-3 foot of dirt necessary for that? Thanks for the reply.
What is the sellers liability for sewer line replacement for undisclosed damage discovered after moving in? I purchased a house and 2 days after moving in raw sewage backed up into the shower & toilets. A plumber came out to snake the sewer line and found the blockage was caused by tree roots. The seller of the house had recently removed a large tree from the front yard and hooked up a 3rd bathroom to the sewer line. In the disclose documents there was no mention of this problem. Is the seller responsible to pay for part or all of the expense to replace the sewer line? If he/she is un willing would I be able to pursue legal action to recover my cost to repair?
where is "behind the curb line" for sewer repair? We are having sewer replacement on our block. Our letter states "As part of this project, the sewer service connection and sewer pipe are to be replaced behind the curb line." Is "behind the curb line" past the curb into the street or past the curb into my yard? It makes a big difference in additional work I will need.
Which is the better material to use to replace a buried section of clay sewer pipe, ABS pipe or cast iron? I have to replace part of a main sewer line. The line is clay. I want to use either ABS pipe or cast iron as the replacement piece for the 8-10 ft section. This will mostly be buried 4 ft underground, with one cleanout sticking out above ground. Apparently both materials are used in such situations: can anyone tell me the merits or demerits of either material?
Cost to repair leaking sewer pipe and add drain pipe access? I recently discovered a leak in my sewer line, which is a galvanized pipe that goes through the foundation of my house. To repair, the plumber quoted 20 feet of replacement plastic piping and adding a drain access for $600 that would take about 3 hours to repair. Is that a reasonable cost or should I get quoted elsewhere?
Need Legal Advice Regarding A Sewer Line/Plumbing Problem? My house is nearly 100 years old we just had to replace our sewer line because it was orangeburg pipe it had collapsed and sewage was leaking into our basement. after the replacement the sewage continued seeping into our basement. we had the plumber come out and look at things, turns out the neighbors to the north and to the east of us are tied into the OLD leaking sewer line. we can't continue to have sewage running into our basement our house stinks, it is a health hazard and is not good especially since I am pregnant. what can we do legally to make our neighbors get their own sewer lines and stop using an old broken one. they are not having any sewer backup and don't see a problem...they are not having backup because our basement has become the neighborhood septic system, please help
City pressure-cleaned sewer line and it it overflowed into my bathroom...what now? The city I live in is in control of all my utilities. They "jet" cleaned the lines and it caused a projectile overflow through my toilet. I didn't know what it was at first. I heard all the plumbing lines in my house going haywire They were rattling and gurgling. After about 10 minutes of scurrying around the house trying to find the source and calling my neighbor over, I noticed a very distinct odor.....Sewage. I ran to the bathroom and I saw a fountain of nasty murky water exploding from my toilet. I closed the lid and the pressure was forceful enough to bring the lid back up. It soon settled down and began to gurgle. There was very little water in there but it bubbled. Then it exploded again. My neighbor saw the city workers outside and flagged them down. They ran into my house and told me that it was because they were flushing the lines. They looked at my bathroom and said that there was extensive damage. They said they could have a clean-up crew come to take care of it but could not guarantee when it would be done....could take a few days. They told me to not touch that bathroom and use my other until the crew had cleaned it up. I told them that I only had ONE bathroom. In addition, I have 3 children, one happened to be a newborn. The mess was unsanitary and it smelled the whole house with raw sewage. They told me to go ahead and clean it and they would send an insurance adjuster to my home to compensate me for the damages and what it would have cost to get a clean up company there. The adjuster came to my home after I had to call her. When she got here, she acted like I was a burrden on her. She told me that I will get "replacement value" and not to expect full price for anything. She was going to review the notes and send her conclusion in the mail. The insurance adjuster sent me a letter a month later stating that they will give me a check for 50 dollars if I agree to sign a liability release form. There was about 600 dollars worth of damage. My house smelled like sin for a few days, it was nothing but an inconvenience and there was nothing I could have done to have prevented this from happening. It will happen again, they told me they will mail me a letter before they clean the lines next time so that I know when they are going to do it. That way I can put a few bricks on my toilet lid. Btw, I never did sign that liability and I called the adjuster to tell her that the 50 dollar offer was only adding insult to injury. AND this has happened to a few of my neighbors as well!! Has anyone ever had anything like this happen before? Are there any agencies I can report this to? To me, this is an environmental hazard and I actually feel vulnerable when it comes to dealing with the city (utility company) as they have shown me that my family and I are of no value to them :( ETA my house is about 45 years old...as are the others on my block and I live in MD if it I did take my own pictures. The adjuster took only a few pictures. How could I get their attention if they are at this point ignoring me since I refuse to sign their letter? They claim that replacement value is what the items could be bought for "used". I'm not buyng a used oral b triumph lol
HTC G1 Android phone Asurion Claim Replacement.? How much do you think it would cost with my T-Mobile insurance to put in a claim on a phone I lost down a manhole city sewer line? See, I'm curious because I (Like many Americans have fallen short in these economic times) wanna see if it would be cost effective to buy one off ebay.com or what.. Anyone that could help with a dollar figure. That would be just superb! Thanks in advance! -Jon
sell easement and right-of-way to neighbor? My neighbor's sewer line runs through my back yard. It needs replacement. Their house was part of 'my' land 60 years ago, and was later privately divided, no surveyance for their place was recorded.. There is no other option for them. I need to remove trees and will now not be able to build a guest house. Neither of us knew anything about this when we purchased 25+ years ago!
Slow emptying shower and gurgling toilet/sinks...? I have roughly 120' of sewer line that wraps around 2 sides of my house and goes out to the street. It is all clay tiles. About a year and 1/2 ago about 10'-12' section of pipe was replaced with the newer stuff where tree roots had clogged up my line. Everything was working fine and was clear to the street. I have noticed recently my shower emptying slower and my toilet gurgling and the level goes down. Same with my kitchen sink, it gurgles too when i shower. Before the pipe replacement, I noticed something was wrong as my washer would overflow when emptying into the sewer line- very slow drainage, lots of sink gurgling. Now, I'm not sure what is wrong, but the root problem area was fixed and cemented in, though I know roots are very sneaky. I've used Root-X, and a very powerful cleaner to open up any possible small clogs, but am wondering and worrying that I may have another large plumbing expense. Any info will help!
Reasonable Attempt: Plumbing/Insurance? I had a broken sewer line to my septic tank that had been backing up at times for the past year. I would routinely snake it out, and this would open things up, until the next time there was build up. I had thought it was a root infiltration but it turns out it was seperated at a joint so there was only 20% drainage. Due to the backup, I believe that I've developed mold under my bedroom floor - along the bathroom drainpipe. My policy covers Rot/Mold/Fungi damage as well as sewer line and sump-pump backups. The only qualifier is a "Reasonable Attempt" to address the problem. Am I wrong in thinking that the mold removal and replacement of any floorboards/fixtures would be covered (within the $$$ guidelines of my policy of course) since I made attempts to rectify the situation?
Disclosure fraud, Inpecto's incompetence: What do I do now? I just bought a house, in CA, and it's been one unpleasant discovery after another. The sellers said that only major problem was a bad sewer line. The inspector said no major problems. Since moving Ive found unframed walls, an unsafe water heater, an unsafe attic, inadequate electrical and plumbing, and, no gas lines in the kitchen. There was wood paneling in one of the bedrooms. The painter said that the wall sounded hollow---he was right, when we removed it, we found there was no framing. Another panel covered up a door wich was not sealed. A window was similarly covered in the kitchen. A plumber said the water heater was unsafe and the pipes would have to be replaced. An electrician said the breakers were ancient and would require replacement. The gas company won't turn on the gas because of unsafe conditions. The carpet hid water damage and a bad attempt to fix termite damage. My question is: how do I hold the seller and the inspector accountable?

How to fight your local government (Ohio) The general health district in Clermont County Ohio has a program called their Basic System Assessment. This is where they go around to every resident in the county that is NOT hooked up to the public sewer system and "assess" the condition of their on-site sewage system (in my case, a septic tank & leach lines) every 38 months. Well, they have an amazing number of "failing systems", of which they require complete replacement (an average of $25,000 - $35,000 per system all their permitting and re-assessment fees). As for the BSA itself, they charge you $30 to come inspect, then $45/mo. for each month your system goes without the "required" replacement. This year, they chose to do their inspections in May (Southern Ohio got 18" ABOVE the average rainfall for May during this time) - soggy yards everywhere - and EVERY house on my ENTIRE street failed the inspection. I have since paid a professional inspection company to come inspect our system and they said they can't find a single problem. No seepage, no odor, no nothing! The county does not publish the "laws" for this inspection, and there is no appeals process. How does one go about fighting something like this? How can the county force me to spend $25,000 to replace a system that is only 20 years old, and that an independent, licensed company has said there is no problem with? Any ideas?

Sewer Problems-Total replacement needed? I had to have my sewer main snaked for the 2nd time in 6 weeks. The plumber was unable to get his 3 inch auger through my 4 inch pipe. He was able to get his 1" auger through to clear the drain and stop the sewage from coming out of the basement sink. The plumber also recommended an immediate total replacement of the sewer line, which is buried in concrete. I had a contractor give me a quote. He recommended that a new main be created from the main sewer stack, which would be mounted about halfway on the basement wall and would then connect to the city sewer main. He is charging $4200 for that way or 6500 to bust up the concrete floor in the basement and then connect to the main. I would lose my basement sink, since the sink drain would be below the new main. Does this sound reasonable or doable to anyone. I am tempted to go for it. I am having problems getting contractors to replace my line because the township mandated new sewer laters for the entire town and all the contractors are busy doing the required laterals. I wasn't due to replace mine until the end of 2010. Also, if I have the new line mounted on the wall, is there any way to get my sink installed at a later date. I am not planning on staying in my current home later than 2012. Thanks. Existing pipe is cast iron. A 1" blade was used to clear the line. All that came back was hair. No roots. The city inspected the main to see if the main was the problem. They used their camera to go into my lateral. It had tree roots in it.
