Need Legal Advice Regarding A Sewer Line/Plumbing Problem? My house is nearly 100 years old we just had to replace our sewer line because it was orangeburg pipe it had collapsed and sewage was leaking into our basement. after the replacement the sewage continued seeping into our basement. we had the plumber come out and look at things, turns out the neighbors to the north and to the east of us are tied into the OLD leaking sewer line. we can't continue to have sewage running into our basement our house stinks, it is a health hazard and is not good especially since I am pregnant. what can we do legally to make our neighbors get their own sewer lines and stop using an old broken one. they are not having any sewer backup and don't see a problem...they are not having backup because our basement has become the neighborhood septic system, please help
How to prevent roots in main line sewer? We have had problems with roots getting into our sewer line and causing clogs. (2 times in the last 18 months). It happened recently, and I had to replace the carpet in my basement. Besides having a plumber snake the line every 12 months, is there anyway to prevent the roots from growing back? Is there a chemical I can pour down my drain once in a while to help keep it clean. I have some pure sulfuric acid, would that work, if I poured that down on occasion? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Is there a way to get rid of roots in main sewer line? Once or twice a year my sinks/toilets slow down and I have to have a plumber clean out my main line. The last two times they have said that because of roots in my sewer line (big pipe from house to city sewer line) there isn't much they can do. One plumber said $3000 to replace the sewer line. So, is there anything I can do to get rid of the roots or at least abate the problem for a year or two? Thanks!
Is a plumber responsible if they break or broke my water line while fixing my sewer line? I have an old sewer line that needed to be repaired. While I was on vacation, they fixed it but apparently also ruptured and broke my water line too. They "attempted" to fix a 3 foot pipe but said they rest of the line is leaking and needs to be totally repaired. They also broke a section of my irrigation system too. They knew about it and mentioned they would put it back together, which they did, but apparently they didn't put it back to together correct. Either way, it doesn't work and I have to call my irrigation company and pay them to fix it. It was not marked, but they knew I had it. The plumber says they are not responsible, but I don't think they can be completed negligent.
How do you cap/block an old (unused) sewer line? I just had my 100-year old sewer line replaced the other day. The last piece, the piece connecting to the city was pretty bad too so the plumber decided to use the new line directly to the city system. He tells me he "blocked" the old line - but I'm still nervous and they're about to cement the road. What is the best way to block it? What if the city backs up? I live in a residential area with an old system, untouched for the last 80 yrs. Thank you in advance for any help.
Sewer line pump a good idea? Our plumber suggested putting in a sewer line pump in the basement floor to force sewage through a low spot in our residential line to reach the main line. The cost is about $6000 less than digging up the yard & he assures us it will do the job. Does anyone have experience with this kind of pump...effective, reliable, etc.?
How do I clear a backup out of our sewer line? Our outgoing sewer line is backed up and were trying to clear it out. My dad just put some root killer cleaner-out-er crap in there.. "copper sulfate"' what does that do? What can we do without calling a plumber to clear stuff out of our pipe? What would sulfiric acid do? Thanks! were on a municiple sewer i guess? we dont have a septic tank i know that
My sewer line have roots in it what should i do? the plumber said i need to get soemone to dig up our lawn to the sewer pipe then he could unclog it. but i read there are root killer chemical i could flush down the toilets to clear it. if i do kill the root won't that make a whole in the sewer line where the root broke though. and it will leak to the dirt...??? \\ what are my best option ?
What is the minimum distance between sewer line and water line? I live in Washington State, and I own a motel. I am currently remodeling a section of the building, where I am putting new motel rooms in. I am currently redoing the plumbing in that building, and I was wondering what the minimum distance is between the water line and the sewer line, according to State regulations for commercial buildings. Could anyone look this up for me? Please provide a link so that I may print it out. Thanks.
Odd plumbing? I have a sump pump that is connected to my sewer line! why would anyone do that? If you follow the pipes, they eventually hook into the main sewer pipe. It appears to be leaking. Can I just seal it off at the main pipe. Any logical reason this backup pipeline exists? This was set up to empty a washer into the municipal sanitary system. It leaks a little because it is not plugged in, and probably catches a little backup now and then. The other sump pump properly drains out to the local ditch. I rigged my washer to directly empty into the sump hole, and out to the ditch. Is that legal?
Slab home, replacing cast iron sewer line with PVC? We have a slab home and one of our sinks drain is completely stopped up. The plumber tried to snake it out and failed. He said he found mud when he pulled the snake back out, and thinks that the iron pipe probably rotted through. However none of the other drains in the house seem to have any problems. He will return with a camera to check it out for certain on Monday (no additional charge) *IF* the pipe is rotted out, he suggests tunneling under the slab to replace the damaged pipe - and considering the age of the house (1962), he suggests replacing all of the iron pipe with PVC all the way to the sewer main. Furthermore he suggests running the new line around the house rather than under it in order to minimize a chance of foundation problems due to excessive tunneling. What do you think of his proposed solution, and how much should such a repair cost?
What's a good price for snaking out a sewer line? Plumbing is probably more expensive than brain surgery, and I can't afford it. I need a line snaked out, but I don't want to get taken. How much should I be paying? I have a city sewer with a new back-up problem after a rainstorm. City guy came out and said the main line is fine, so it's a problem between my house and the main line. How much should I be paying? Thanks!
how much can i expect to have a plumber come out on a sunday for a clogged main sewer line? this morning around 5am my wife took a shower as usual before she went to work. we heard some gurgling sounds from the toilets as she showered. then all of a sudden the shower stopped draining and the toilet bowl emptied and now we have standing water in the other tub and in the shower she was in. and the water in the unused tub is filthy to say the least. but considering i've never had any problems with the plumbing before i'm not sure what the typical cost of a plumber on a early sunday morning would be. any ideas?
Should we replace our sewer line with PVC or ABS? There is a crack in the existing cast iron sewer line and we need to replace 40 feet. My uncle said to get PVC because you can hear the water/sewage run through the ABS. The plumber said that is really only true for two+ story homes or if the pipe is underground. We have a one story ranch with a crawl space. The price is the same, but we'd have to specifically request PVC from the plumber.
Does homeowners insurance cover replacing broken sewer line? I've had trouble with stopped up sewer line from my house to water main about once a year since moved to house 1997. Plumber has been able to temporarily clean out the line each time, but we have come to the point that it must be replaced. It apparently is cracked or broken probably from tree roots. I can't locate anything in policy that states whether the sewer line is considered part of home. I also have been having electrical problems such as flickering lights & some outlets don't work & electric company says trouble is in house. Should I wait before filing a claim on that, or is it OK to file 2 seperate claims at once? Also, is there time limit or can I go back to when these problems started years ago? Never filed a claim befor in my life. Deductible is $1500.00.
Plumbing question (Sewer line)? I have 10 apartments and my sewer line backed up. I have a commerical snake (100 feet), tried it 3 times still would not open. Will a commercial snake work on grease? Thanks.
my main sewer line is plugged and backing up into my basement? my toilet is bubbling and runs all over my basement floor everytime water is used anywhere in the house. we have a drain hole in our basement floor but we cant get the cover off. is there any other main source line we can snake out? we cant afford a plumber.
Problem with Sewer Line. Help? Hello, I have a house built in 1908 that had orangeburg sewer line installed in 1940's. The orangeburg line under my garage floor failed, broken under the concrete in 2 spots. I had a plumber come out and install a new line in a different spot, torn up the lawn, sidewalk and the street up and tapped into the sewer. He rerouted all the plumbing to the new line in my basement and capped off the old line and abandon it. The new line is working great. I went down to the basement the other night and noticed water is trying to push out of the cap on the old line and the wall is wet dripping water. I took the cap off the old line and water was gushing out of it and wouldn't stop. I think my next store neighbor is tied into the old broken line. Because the land her house is on use to be part of my property until 1949 when her house was built. Her house is about 3 feet away from my garage where the sewer line is at. My question is what do I do about this? I cant have leaking sewage and sewer gas in my basement. If she is tied into my old broken line, can I force her off the broken line that she shouldn't be tied into and have her tap her own line? Update, the plumber came by and verified what I was afraid of, the next store neighbor is tied into the old line. The plumber stated its not the static head of the sewer system that's causing the problem.
A tree roots broke into my sewer line. Should HOA pay for it? A tree roots broke into my sewer line. I hired a plumber to snake it. He did a camera inspection afterwards and found that my PVC pipe is broken between my house and the city line. I live in Florida, in a community with HOA and they are responsible for all outside maintenance including tree trimming, etc. I cannot even dig on my own lot in front of the house without their permission. I'm going to open a claim with my homeowner insurance - Citizens, but even if they cover it, I still need to pay a deductible. So I guess my questions are: Who is responsible for a repair - HOA or me? If I'm liable for a repair, should I ask my HOA to knock down the tree to prevent future breakage? If Citizens will pay for it, can HOA reimburse my deductible? HOA agreement contains nothing about sewer... Like this problem never happens…
Cost to have main sewer line cleaned, like Roto Rooter? Having some plumbing problems. The shower and toilet will not drain at all, and when doing laundry the water backs up in to the shower. I've had this problem before, and it was due to clogged pipes - tree roots. Does anyone know how much it normally costs to have the main line cleaned (I do have a clean-out access outside). I've tried to look on Roto-rooter and similar websites, but nobody gives any kind of rough estimate.
How to prevent sewer lines from freezing? OK, for those who read our last ?, here is the follow-up: Didnt have to sue the plumber, the new overflow is from the back sewer line freezing during the winter storm that came through after he was here originally. (He was nice & didn't charge me...bless him). He told me: the sewer line from the back (house addition) to the point where it joins the front sewer line (original) was 1) not buried deep enough in the ground to avoid freezing, which means this will happen forever due to nature & 2) the back line does not have a steep enough grade for gravity to do it's job & pull the water down the pipe. about 1/4" or so water sits in the pipe until pushed through each time...just waiting to freeze while standing there. We can't afford to dig up the pipe & relay it. He said constant trickling water will only sit and build, eventually freezing. Intervals of hot water, like from the tub (to keep it moving) will freeze faster, plus run bills up. Suggestions as to how to deal with this?
Major Plumbing Issue!Possible sewer line break? We have an issue with our bathroom/ garage (they share the same wall). We have flies! Every time the weather warms up, there is a smell in the wall that the bathroom shares and we have attack of the flies! They only live hours to the most end of the day, and I have seen the hard coating around our toilette. What could this be? And to complicate things... this all started a couple months after the house next door blew up from a gas explosion (as soon as it got warm outside). Could this have caused this issue? Thanks for the help!
What is the sellers liability for sewer line replacement for undisclosed damage discovered after moving in? I purchased a house and 2 days after moving in raw sewage backed up into the shower & toilets. A plumber came out to snake the sewer line and found the blockage was caused by tree roots. The seller of the house had recently removed a large tree from the front yard and hooked up a 3rd bathroom to the sewer line. In the disclose documents there was no mention of this problem. Is the seller responsible to pay for part or all of the expense to replace the sewer line? If he/she is un willing would I be able to pursue legal action to recover my cost to repair?
Softball in sewer line!!? My son dropped a softball in our sewer line in the backyard, now our drains inside are clogging up. My husband has tried sticking the hose of a shop vac down in there to try to suction it out, but he had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas to try to get this out on our own without having to call a plumber?
Recently, I looked in a rarely used toilet in my house and found a frog. Is this a sign of a plumbing problem? I have seen on TV where lizards, snakes, and other critters are getting into toilets through the sewer/plumbing line. It would seem like there should be some sort of backflow valve to keep sewage and critters from coming into the house. Is it normal for things like this to take place in a 5 year old home that was a new construction? There are no mature trees around that would have broken a line or anything like that. Is there anything that can be done so that we do not have more visitors in the toilets that are not frequently used? Or even worse, before they decide to explore further into our home?
What should I do about my broken sewer line? I live in Houston, Tx. in a house that was built in 1959. A plumber came out to snake out the sewer line that serves my kitchen and laundry room. About 5ft into the line he kept hitting mud and told me the pipe was broken. It is a cast iron sewer pipe. He quoted me $1400 to dig from the side of the house up under the slab and patch the pipe. I called another plumber and he said it was better to replace the entire line. He quoted me $3000 to bury a new sewer line along the side of the house and connect to the main line going out to the city sewer. Should I patch? replace? call another plumber? any other ideas?
how to fix clogged sewer line? all the bathroom is clogged or something. and Water is just keep on coming out (It's dirty & filthy) anybody know how to fix this problem and not have to call the plumber? I need help ASAP!
Does anyone know how much it would cost to repair a 4" section of my main sewer line that connects to street? A plumber came out to clear my main sewer line and upon inspection found that a 4" piece of the pipe was cracked with roots growing in there. The piece is right new where it connects to the city connection. He said the pipe would have to be replaced and estimated $5,000. This is a home we just bought and knew nothing about. The plumber said there had been previous work done to the pipe within the last 5 years. The previous owner put in the down stairs bathroom, he should've known about this shouldn't he? Do I have any recourse to get any money out of him for the repairs?
Southwestern Bell Damaged My Sewer System, What Should I Do? I recently purchased a home and had the water utilities turned on. I noticed that the toliet would not flush. I called a plumber and after he unclogged the main sewer line. We noticed that it is a telephone wire running through the sewer system drain pipe going into the city sewer system. A couple of years ago the telephone company ran new wires under ground all around the city. And apparently who every dug the trenches, trenched through my sewer line. I need information n What should I do, and how do I contact there corporate office. And what should I say?
Main Sewer Line Under My House - Is this unhealthy? Revised? My house was built in '77, the plot of land our house is on was never to be sold or built on. Our house is sitting on top of the main sewer line for our subdivision. The pipes have been there since '58, when the other houses in the subdivision were built. The water and sewer co. is going to close off the pipes that are underneath and reroute them around our house. Is the soil underneath my house contaminated? We had to have our crawl space treated for mold, but no one could tell where the mold originated. Me and my little girls have had hives, sinus problems and dizziness since moving in here two years ago. Could there be a connection? What does the water company do with the existing pipes under the house when they close them off? Our house should have never been built and no one will help us, the building commissioner said "the guy who signed off on the plumbing for the house is dead and so is the builder, you're out of luck". Can anyone offer any advise?
How much does it cost to remove roots from sewer line mechanically? I have a plumber coming out tomorrow (Wed) to give me an estimate on mechanicall removing roots from my sewer line. I don't have time to get multiple quotes and would like to give him the green light to proceed if the price is reasonable, but I don't know what a reasonable price is. My sewer line is about 150 feet long and probably pretty overgrown. Has anyone had this done? If so, what did you pay and how long was your sewer line? P.S. I've looked into chemicals like copper sulfide and rootX, but it appears that you are better of removing roots with mechanical auger first, then keeping things in check with annual chemical treatments. Also, a year ago one plumber quoted me $3000 for installation of a new sewer line, but I would like to postpone that.
Cost to repair leaking sewer pipe and add drain pipe access? I recently discovered a leak in my sewer line, which is a galvanized pipe that goes through the foundation of my house. To repair, the plumber quoted 20 feet of replacement plastic piping and adding a drain access for $600 that would take about 3 hours to repair. Is that a reasonable cost or should I get quoted elsewhere?
City pressure-cleaned sewer line and it it overflowed into my bathroom...what now? The city I live in is in control of all my utilities. They "jet" cleaned the lines and it caused a projectile overflow through my toilet. I didn't know what it was at first. I heard all the plumbing lines in my house going haywire They were rattling and gurgling. After about 10 minutes of scurrying around the house trying to find the source and calling my neighbor over, I noticed a very distinct odor.....Sewage. I ran to the bathroom and I saw a fountain of nasty murky water exploding from my toilet. I closed the lid and the pressure was forceful enough to bring the lid back up. It soon settled down and began to gurgle. There was very little water in there but it bubbled. Then it exploded again. My neighbor saw the city workers outside and flagged them down. They ran into my house and told me that it was because they were flushing the lines. They looked at my bathroom and said that there was extensive damage. They said they could have a clean-up crew come to take care of it but could not guarantee when it would be done....could take a few days. They told me to not touch that bathroom and use my other until the crew had cleaned it up. I told them that I only had ONE bathroom. In addition, I have 3 children, one happened to be a newborn. The mess was unsanitary and it smelled the whole house with raw sewage. They told me to go ahead and clean it and they would send an insurance adjuster to my home to compensate me for the damages and what it would have cost to get a clean up company there. The adjuster came to my home after I had to call her. When she got here, she acted like I was a burrden on her. She told me that I will get "replacement value" and not to expect full price for anything. She was going to review the notes and send her conclusion in the mail. The insurance adjuster sent me a letter a month later stating that they will give me a check for 50 dollars if I agree to sign a liability release form. There was about 600 dollars worth of damage. My house smelled like sin for a few days, it was nothing but an inconvenience and there was nothing I could have done to have prevented this from happening. It will happen again, they told me they will mail me a letter before they clean the lines next time so that I know when they are going to do it. That way I can put a few bricks on my toilet lid. Btw, I never did sign that liability and I called the adjuster to tell her that the 50 dollar offer was only adding insult to injury. AND this has happened to a few of my neighbors as well!! Has anyone ever had anything like this happen before? Are there any agencies I can report this to? To me, this is an environmental hazard and I actually feel vulnerable when it comes to dealing with the city (utility company) as they have shown me that my family and I are of no value to them :( ETA my house is about 45 years old...as are the others on my block and I live in MD if it I did take my own pictures. The adjuster took only a few pictures. How could I get their attention if they are at this point ignoring me since I refuse to sign their letter? They claim that replacement value is what the items could be bought for "used". I'm not buyng a used oral b triumph lol
Clog in the main sewer line? Difficult situation.? I've got a small retail building that is rented out. The renter is in the process of remodeling in order to open a store. When they run alot of water in the sink, water would flow back out under the commode. I put a drain cleaning machine in the 4" cleanout hole. The cable went in a few feet beyond the bend and then stopped. I spun it, and the cleaning head broke off. I called a plumber. He looked down the cleanout hole with a scope and saw a brick in the main sewer line, along with my broken cleaning head. He could not get them out, and said I was on my own. The sewer line is under a concrete pad. I broke up a 2' hole in the pad over the blockage and dug down to the cast iron sewer pipe. We've had 6" of rain this week, and the hole fills up with water. I can't dig out the mud that's at the bottom of the hole around the pipe, but I'm pretty sure that I can scoop it out after removing the 12" of standing water that is in the hole with a shop-vac. How can I open up the cast iron sewer pipe to get the brick out? About 2' under the concrete pad I found a Y shaped cleanout hole that had a metal plug. There is also the cleanout hole that I and the plumber used to get access to the blockage. The brick is between the 2 cleanout holes. I have an oxy/acet cutting torch, if that's what it would take to open up the pipe. There is also 220 volt service at the location, and I can stick weld the sewer line back together. I plan on filling the hole I dug with gravel. I filled up a 5-gallon bucket 7 times with the material that I'm digging out, that gives you an idea of the size of the hole. I still need to dig further, as only the top of the sewer is exposed.
I have a clogged sewer line and need to unclog it. HELP!? I tried a snake, a hose, liquid plumber and nothing has worked. Someone told me to use Root Destroyer since the main reason why it gets clogged it's because of the roots. What is your advice for me. This questions is for people who have experienced this problem or professional plumbers. I'll be checking all day to give those 10 points. Thanks a lot!!!!!
Need Advise on Sewer Line Repair? My sewer line clogs every 2-3 weeks. The clog is about 8 feet from the cleanout and I can clear the clog by running my garden hose to the clog and blasting it free. It's always at the same spot and can't be very deep. I suspect there is a coupling at the site since there is 3" pipe coming from the house. It may transition to 4" at the point of the clog. I have also had it rotorooted and there are some roots at the site. The tree was removed 6 months ago and the stump ground so I'm hoping the root problem will stop soon. Would it be reasonable to dig up the site myself and then have a plumber make the repair? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Getting real old going out and clearing the pipe, usually first thing in the morning but hate to have the entire sewer line replaced when the problem seems to be so localized. House about 30 years old.
Copper Sulfate vs Rock Salt for tree roots in sewer line? Home Depot etc. sell copper sulfate crystals for tree roots in sewer lines. Plumbers seem to recommend rock salt for the same purpose. Everyone seems to agree that copper sulfate works better. But does that take the cost into account? Ten pounds of copper sulfate might be a lot more effective than ten pounds of rock salt, but is $10 worth of copper sulfate more effective than $10 worth of rock salt?
What is the average cost of hydro jetting a main sewer line? I bought a house 7 months ago that contains terracotta sewer pipes. Recently I have been experiencing some backup due to the main sewer line being clogged. I had some plumbers come out and they hydro jetted (power washed) my sewer line and it cost me $2100. If anyone else has had this procedure done, how much have you paid? $2100 seems awfully high.
Do most standard home owners insurances cover sewer line breaks (not sewage backups)? I see a plethora of information out there, even in my own policy, that makes it clear that sewage backups are usually not covered. However, I do not have a backup. I have a sewer line under my basement slab that is broken - most likely due to age and shifting. The plumbers are still tearing up my house to fix it, so I am not ready to file the claim yet. My plumber told me that since it is not a sewage backup and the pipe is actually broken, they will cover the costs to dig down and get to it and to cover it back up, but not the parts for the pipe. He said this is usually the case in his experience and he's been in the business for 45 years. I want to believe him, but I'm afraid I could be stuck with a $8k bill.
Our sewer line was clogged by fabric/dryer sheets. We never flush fabric, where could it have come from? Our rental house was experiencing a clog so our landlord called the plumbers. They snaked out to the main sewer line in the yard and found a fabricy/dryer sheet like substance. Problem is we never use dryer sheets or flush fabric (no kids either). Now the landlord is blaming us for the clog- is there any other way this could have gotten into our line besides from us? We recently had very heavy rains in the area (causing something on the order of 100-year flooding).
Sewer line replacement/repacking trench? We recently replaced our sewer line and are left with a 2-3 foot high mountain range of dirt in our front yard. Will this go away with settling or do we need to have our plumbers pack it down more before we pay them? The trench was roughly 10 foot deep and the contract said they would smooth it to ground level and mound for settling. Is 2-3 foot of dirt necessary for that? Thanks for the reply.
How can I fix a broken sewer pipe ? The tub and toilet would not drain or flush. A plumber was snaking out the pipe, starting in the toilet and the snake came out of the dirt planter and onto the driveway. The cast iron pipe that exits from underneath my bathroom floor to the exterior and then underneath my driveway , has split open/ corroded at the top. We dug up the dirt and exposed the pipe. It is cast iron and then is connected to clay. We removed the dirt and toilet paper that made the stoppage. Now everything drains! The plumber says he needs to put a camera down and run it to the street to see what else is wrong/cracked , and that he cannot repair the exsisting pipe because it is cracked. He said he will have to check with the City to see where the sewer lines are and their direction in my driveway . A friend says , "Seal or cover the split open top of the pipe and cover it with some concrete". I believe there is also an expensive sleeve they can run thru the length of the pipe. HELP !! any suggestions? I am on the 'down' side of the street, in a mountain area. My sewer line is probably way to deep in the street for me to do the job. Back hoe territory!
Why does my main sewer line keep clogging? I have a 2 family rental property that has the main sewer line keep backing up. Near the water meter there is a main clean out. When I take the access cover off and shine a flashlight down the hole it's dry. So now I know the clog is further up pipe. About 10 feet up pipe there is another main clean out and when I take the cover off on this one it's filled with water. I now know the clog is in a 10 foot section of pipe between the 2 main clean outs. My question is why does it keep clogging up there? I can get the drain flowing by running a lot of water down it but with waste and toilet paper it just clogs up again. Why? Things I've tried. 1. Draino (Helps but drain clogs again). 2. Sewer auger with 4.5" grinder bit (worked great but drain keeps clogging). 3. Snake (gets clog out but clogs again a few days later). Help! I don't want to have to call a plumber so he can charge my $$$ just to do the same stuff I've been doing. The clog is underground inside the house. I don't think the main line has collapsed inside the house, seems sort of unlikely. Does a boar scope have a light on it? Can it see in a drain that's full of water? The clog is inside the house so I doubt roots are the problem. I ran the 4.5" sewer grinder 100ft down. I figure the auger made it about 20-30ft into the city's main line. I did pull out some tree roots but the clog now is inside the house so I don't think tree roots are to blame. The section of floor in between the 2 drain clean outs is a dirt floor so if I do have to dig up that section of pipe it's not the end of the world but will be a lot of backbreaking work.
how to open (grey water line) sewer line? a plumber put in a new line from dishwasher to main.. I want to open a off line so I can get grey water for other uses ...he did a great job but left me no room to get at line .. is there a way to melt / open a glueed joint without cutting .... I just need to redirect for a short while ... dont need to cut and redo his work...thanks
Need to replace a cast iron waste pipe and main sewer line and trap.Is this estimate right? Should I replace? The plumber estimates replacing a rusted iron cast waste pipe that is about 20 feet long and exposed for $2600. That includes replacing with a pvc material. I know I need to get this done because the rust is so bad its starting to drip. However, he notcied that the main sewer and trap line out to the public system needs to replaced soon as well. They would have to dig up my driveway for that. They estimate $3500 for that job. Are these estimates in the ball park? If the waste started rusting out, I am assuming the main line out to the public is bad too, but can I wait until next year to replace before it becomes a problem? If I wait and it backsup, will it be more money to replace later than now? I just dont have the money to do the $3500 job, but need to know if this is immediate need? Thanks for your help.
Repairing Leaking Sewer Line? Long story, I'll try to make it simple. There is a hole in our basement wall where we can see out under the yard. We were planning on filling this cavity with dirt or concrete when we noticed a leak. That leak is coming from a stoneware sewer line. The line isn't damaged -- the leak is coming from a joint between two pipes. What is my best course of action? I've called a couple plumbers to have them take a look at it. I'd be happiest if there was some kind of sealant I could put on the pipe since I can see and reach it (but I'm probably not going to be that lucky).
Can a sewer line fresh air vent/clean-out vent be inside of a garage instead of outside of the house? I live in the Pittsburgh area, all of the houses around me have a fresh air sewer line vent on either their lawns or driveways which is also used to clean out clogs (roots) if needed. The prior owners added an addition and garage over mine therefor placing it inside of one of my garages. The garage is connected to the house but there is no way to enter the house from that garage. Some plumbers told me that it should be moved and others said that in the garage is O.K. I just want to know if this is against code or not.
I am looking for an affordable plumber in Indianapolis, IN? I am needing a new sewer drain line put in at a house I just purchased in Indy. Can anyone give me the name of a plumber that does good work at a fair price? I am a student and just closed on the house on Fri, so I am kinda strapped for cash right, but need this done as soon as I am able to get enough money for it.
In a two story apartment building, are the sewer lines connected? I really don't know how to put this question. In a two story apartment building, if the apartment below has to get a plumber to use a snake, will it effect the person on top's apartment? If the top persons toilet is clogged, and the bottom runs a snake through the pipes will it help with the top's problem? If they are stacked, do the lines runs together?
sewer line clogg? is there any way that we can tell if its just a reaccuring clog or if its due to the pipe being broken from tree roots, we have had to have plumber come out 6 times in a yr and each time they are only getting toliet paper out. We are currently working with a new plumber from our church who advised us that he thinks we have what he calls a shakey elbow and he is gonna help us replace in spring for only 1/3 of the price because we are gonna do the manual labor part.
I need to clear a sewer vent that has junk in it. Help!? My main sewer line has been running slow, so I opened up the vent in the front sidewalk to see how much was running through, only to discover that some vandal had put a tin can in there. And other unrecognizeable stuff. I called a plumber, but he kept telling me he could not use a snake to go upstream, and I couldn't get it through his head that he didn't have to go upstream. He wouldn't even look in the vent. The vent is about four feet from the sidewalk to the main sewer line, 4" wide. I tried a magnet on a stick. No luck. My roof drains are connected to my main sewer. If I can't clear that line and it rains, it will back up into my house, so this is no joke. Any ideas? 1. I need to get the can out of the vent. I can't reach it. The plumber wouldn't help. It will do no good to snake the main line because the can is in the VENT. I need advice on how to get it out. Maybe something creative. Some tool I don't know about. 2. The municipaiity here is San Francisco, Califorrnia, where we have a lot of flat roofs and no front yards. Code requires that roofs be drained to the sewer. Look it up. If you let roof water run off, it ends up in the storm drains that attach to the same sewer lines. Unfortunately, my house was built in that window between the time the code required such drainage and when it required a back-up valve. No lectures on code, please.
Can the slope to the main sewer line change from a negative slope to a positive one? Our guest toilet clogged. Plumber tried to snake it, pushed something through and then diagnosed it as poor jets. Next day our kitchen sink clogged. Plumber snaked it and got it flowing slowly. 4 days later our master bath sink backed into the shower. Today plumber checked the main drain through the cleanout and couldnt clear it with a 300lb snake. Stated he couldn't push through and then got a camera out. He saw a massive toilet paper clog and noticed water collecting in the main, down stream from the clog. He diagnosed it as improper installation or a shift of earth around the main, not adhering to 1/4 inch slope every foot. He stated that he could not remove the clog and to fix the problem he would have to dig out our main pipe in our crawl space and re-lay 50 feet of pipe. Damage estimate is $4000. The house is 30 years old and we bought it 5 months ago. Can earth move sufficient enough to change the slope of the main with sudden effects? Why can't he remove the clog?
HELP! Our main sewer line leaks into our bedroom? We rent a little 1 story cottage and the bathroom is in the middle of the house. We noticed that our toilet clogged and sewage water seeped through our bedroom floor (5 ft area). After 2 weeks, the landlord finally got a plumber there and did the camera snake. Cracked clay pipe with roots all the way to the street. We are trying to be understanding about it, and he said it will be 2 weeks until they fix it. It has been a month now and we asked him about it. He gave us a car salesman answer, and we've been sleeping in our living room for a month? Now what?
About how much should it cost to have my main sewer line drain unclogged? I tried a drain snake myself today, but the clog is too deep and I can't reach it. I need to call a plumber tomorrow, but I am pretty sure my drain just needs to be cleared with an electric drain snake. (I think there are old tampons in there.) I will probably call Roto Rooter or a local plumber. About how long will it take for them to unclog the drain, and about how much should it cost? I live in Auburn, WA- near Seattle.
Sewer backup caused by the sewer company flushing main line? I have lived at my house for 10 years and never had my sewer back up till this year. MSD has been flushing out the main line and every time they flush the main line it causes my lateral to backup and clogg. They have been to my house and say the main is clear so the problem is at the lateral not the main. Well of course the main is clear because it was just flushed two days ago. Several other neighbors have also called plumbers due to clogged drains immediately after the sewer company flushes out the main line. They say its very unlikely that flushing the main caused it to backup and clog my lateral but what else can I assume when I ve never had a sewer problem till this year and only have a problem when they are on my street flushing out the main line at least three times this year I've had to call a plumber when they have done this on my street. Help
How can I get rid of the sewage odor in my house?!? My husband and I just bought a house and there is horrible sewage smell that comes and goes in our bedroom. We've been in the house for about a week and noticed it the second night we slept here. It comes from a specific corner of the bedroom. On the other side of the wall from the smell is the bathroom toilet, and in the crawl space the main sewage line that leads to the city main and a sewer vent. When we first moved in we had blockage in the sewer lines and we had a plumber out (through our home warranty) to clear the lines. Since the lines have been cleared I called the home warranty back and had them send the plumber back because of the smell. The plumber said that it is gas from the vent coming in through the window. He also said that I just have to live with it! That is not okay. No one should have to live with the smell of sewage in their bedroom. We do not believe that it is coming in through the window. What should we do -call home warranty again?!
Need Legal Advice Regarding A Sewer Line/Plumbing Problem? My house is nearly 100 years old we just had to replace our sewer line because it was orangeburg pipe it had collapsed and sewage was leaking into our basement. after the replacement the sewage continued seeping into our basement. we had the plumber come out and look at things, turns out the neighbors to the north and to the east of us are tied into the OLD leaking sewer line. we can't continue to have sewage running into our basement our house stinks, it is a health hazard and is not good especially since I am pregnant. what can we do legally to make our neighbors get their own sewer lines and stop using an old broken one. they are not having any sewer backup and don't see a problem...they are not having backup because our basement has become the neighborhood septic system, please help it was found during video inspection that when the neighbors flush, use water ect it would flow into our old abandon line, he also found the pipes underground via a locator that came from their basements and connected to the old line which runs under our garage it can not be our sewer leaking because we have an entirely new sewer pipe on a different side of the house and all of our sewage is routed that way into the city main
How much to add a bathroom? I am thinking about adding a bathroom in my garage which was converted into a living space. The garage is not connected to the house and the restroom in the house is clear on the other side. How does the plumber know where the sewer line is, and how much do you think it would cost for the whole project including putting up the walls for the restroom.
Main Sewer Back up? Big Flood? Had the shower running, Water was gushing out of the 2 bolts that hold down the toilet. Plumber said main line was clogged due to trees the were located by the sewer line in the front of the house. He snaked it and some roots were pulled out. Water damaged carpet in a couple of rooms, So my question is how can I prevent this from happening in the future? Is there a way to seal the toilet so if the water backs up, the tub will fill? I live on a slab, no basement. And I just killed myself replacing the carpet and getting the smell out. Thanks for the advice, I guess I will by some root killer and see of that works. Next step I guess would be to get out the old shovel and Pick. To bad none of my tax money can pay for this since its hooked up to a public sewer system. They should be the ones to replace the lines. Since the weeds are probably coming through where they connected it to the house originally
