Sewers

Why does my bathroom smell like sewer gas?

Our home (of 5years) is on septic and we've never had any trouble with back ups or had to have it pumped. In the last year, the master bath (remodeled 4 years ago) has begun to smell like sewer gas. It occurs most often after the shower is used, but doesn't necessarily come from the shower. The husband recently replaced the wax seal on the toilet, These episodes seem to occur in random spurts.

  1. Maybe you haven't had problems with your septic system in the past, but from what you describe... it sounds like you do now. Better have it looked at.
  2. check that there is a trap for each fixture, also see that the vent( stink pipe) is not blocked off. One other thing the toilette is it's own trap see if the wax ring is seated properly. Good luck
  3. You should have your tank pumped every year or so, whether you are having problems or not. If the solids level reaches the level of the outflow pipe, then you are going to get solids and grease in your leach field which will kill it. For the sewer gas smell, check the fill tube in the toilet tank(the small plastic tube), and make sure it goes into the the overflow tube. This helps fill the bowl up after the flush, and reseal the trapway
  4. The problem is almost certainly a clogged vent, although I would check the was ring on the toilet. If the pipes are not venting properly, the water rushing out of whatever you are using will suck the water out of the other traps. Once the water in the trap is low enough sewer gases can come into the room. Another thing to check for is whether you have a vent fixture venting the vanity sink. (will be visible in the vanity cabinet) They are used more often now and can certainly fail.
  5. ask a professional in that area, i would be concerned
