weeping willow tree's roots are in my sewer pipes...?
I have to have my pipes replaced out to the main sewer line bc the roots of the weeping willow in my yard have grown into the pipes and broken them. Its a costly repair. They said they will cut the roots back... will this hurt the tree? They are going to put root killer around the pipes so we wont have this issue again. Will this hurt the tree? and what are the odds the roots grown into the pipe at a different spot?

- cutting the weeds back will not hurt the tree, nor will the weed killer. But these are both short term solutions to a long term problem. weeping willow trees follow water and will try to grow into the pipes again, if a leak or seam is found. Make sure the contractor does a good job laying the pipes
- Unfortunately weeping willows are notorious for this. The chemicals/root trimming probably won't hurt the tree but yes, those roots will continue to find any crack or hole in your pipes. If you don't want to remove the tree you could have your pipes checked regularly. If they do find roots they can use a machine in the pipe that cuts away the roots inside.
- If you cut a weeping willow tree down it will still grow back so I think it will be OK and if they use all new PVC pipe and glue it good you should not have any more problems.
- I had a tree root + sewer line problem on my old house. I had a sewer tube coming out of the roof, so I paid a plumber about $80, and he ran a snake down in it and pulled the roots out of the sewer. Had to do this every about every 2 yrs. Cheapest solution. And the problem tree was in a neighbor's house. And I'm lazy. And I sold the house soon afterwards.
