Kitchen disposer installation in Japan?

I live in Japan and I want to install a kitchen waste disposer. The builder wants me to build some kind of underground tank for purifying the scraps-I`m not sure what he means but he said that installing a disposer is kind of like adding another bathroom. The cost of the underground tank is about $5000. The sewer system here is different than in the US, but I was wondering if I could just install the disposer without the underground tank and do you think it would cause any problems?

  1. depending on the codes of the area it might be a problem you should check with the local building department to see what thier rules are on that point. physically though if you have a DWV pipe that is 1 1/2 inches or larger there is nothing that can stop you from doing it yourself. if you have any other questions let me know.
  2. try looking into an Insinkerator Brand garbage disposal. They make a model that adds enzymes that help break the waste down with each use. It is designed to be used on a septic system, but might work for your application. The only negative is that you need to change the enzyme chemical container every so often, so it is not 100% maintenance free.
