Why does New York City pump nitrogen into the sewers?
When I walk around the city I'll notice three or four man-sized canisters of nitrogen with hoses leading into man holes. Does anyone know what's going on?

- although liquid nitrogen is piped down the storm drains, the NYC storm sewer system is not its ultimate destination. The nitrogen is not dispersed into the atmosphere of the storm sewers, but is closely targeted. Both Con Ed and New York Telephone use liquid nitrogen in various ways in the maintenance of cables and fiber bundles.
