How do I clear a backup out of our sewer line?
Our outgoing sewer line is backed up and were trying to clear it out. My dad just put some root killer cleaner-out-er crap in there.. "copper sulfate"' what does that do? What can we do without calling a plumber to clear stuff out of our pipe? What would sulfiric acid do? Thanks! were on a municiple sewer i guess? we dont have a septic tank i know that

- Sounds like you need your sewer line "snaked out".
- You don't say if you're on a municipal sewer system or a septic tank and field. I'll assume you're on a septic tank. If so, your tank is likely full and needs to be sucked out with a vacuum truck. If your system is less than 10 years old, there is likely a filter installed between the tank and septic field to keep solids from getting from the tank and plugging up your field (which can easily cost $5,000.00 to dig up and replace). The filter may be located under a cover at one end of the tank or in the lawn under a plastic cap about 6" in diameter. Find it, lift it out and wash it clean with a garden hose. This may resolve your problem. Good luck.
- USA I don't know what the copper sulfate will do. Acid is nasty on metal pipes, and will damage or deteriorate them. I have always unblocked sewer lines using a snake or by taking the piping apart. I have never had luck with liquids down the drain. Where is the blockage - inside the building or outside? Look for a cleanout in the main drain line. Use a fish tape or equivalent to find and remove the blockage if it is inside the house. If it is outside, you can still try with a snake, but, it might be tree roots. If it is roots you will need to call a professional drain cleaner.
- roto rooter that's the name call the pros and stink shall be all gone...
