Sewers

The basement in our large building smells like sewer gas. The drains also back up. Help?

We have a large basement that smells like sewage or rotten eggs in the morning. I am afraid that it is a health hazard. All the plumbers the landlord talks to have no idea how to fix it. Should we talk to an engineer?

  1. Oh dear. Yes, you really should have a house inspector come in and find out what the problem is. There are people who have special tools to look at plumbing and find out where the problem areas are. Suggest this to your landlord: I bet you're not the only one experiencing a problem here. Good luck!
  2. It's possible the drains are not connected to the main sewer line. That's not uncommon... in fact it happened to several houses in my mom's subdivision and it took 3-4 years after they were built for the problem to surface. Yes, definitely have the landlord have a building inspector check out the drains. It's not only a health hazard, but will affect the value of the property. It may very well be expensive to repair, with possible legal problems for the plumbing firm which was responsible for connecting the house to the sewer lines.
  3. you definitly have a blockage if you are on a public sewer line the company should have it checked if you are on a septic system your tanks are full or blocked have them checked.otherwise call roto router tehy can unblock it or send a camera down to find the problem.
