Septic system!?

We just had our engineering for a septic done, what I don't understand is we have to do a mound system. Here in Massachusetts, the state says perk rate has to be 1 in 60, the town says 1 in 30, and we passed the 1 in 30, though barely. Now the engineer says the ground level is 100, the ground changes at 97 to a gravel mix, that's where the 1 in 27 was measured, so why do we have to go up to elevation of 105? Why can't we go down to the 97 and start our leach field there? He gave no explanation, it's been approved by town, so I'm sure it's a good design, just don't know why it has to be mound.

  1. Whatever..you always have to satify the city inspectors..Where we live we usually have the bottom of the drain field about 3' deep. Perhaps it's that much different there..Either way..much of the moisture is lost thru evaporation.. I worked with a contractor for 6 yrs..we did a lot of drain fields..we dug trenchs 5' wide..length always determined by leach test & number of bedrooms.
  2. What explanation have you gotten from the engineer? Does his explanation jive w/the local/state authorities? You've already paid for the explanation when you retained his services unless it was specifically called out otherwise.
  3. Why are you concerned? The basic cost of that is negligible so have it done, its a wise decision.
