Sewers

Does regular toilet paper clog sewer lines if used in normal amounts?

We are having an argument that toilet paper is bad for the sewer lines. Do you know of any research on this topic?

  1. A test of a plumber is to know how to put lines in where the water does not outrun the paper.
  2. paper will brake down and not clog a sewer line....ladies napkins is another thing also handi whips
  3. It's not something that we often discuss around others, so you may want to steer clear of the link http://overexpose.net/Guate/Adron%20Gardner/Blog/FA7B7D15-0187-4AB9-908F-F03D1718E8C4.html where appear the words "We U.S.A. people and modernized nation people happily flush our toilet paper off to Davy Jones every day after a trip to the bathroom. However in Central America and much of the world, the sewer systems cannot handle paper since there is no modern plumbing, sufficient water pressure or advanced waste processing."
  4. If the plumbing was properly installed and there are no defects in system toilet paper should not clog the pipes. If there is a problem like roots growing in sewer or a broken pipe underground then the paper will hang up,buildup and collect until pipe clogs.I work for Roto Rooter and tell everyone only flush Toilet paper and human waste.Nothing else.
  5. In normal amounts of toilet paper thrown in a toilet, its not supposed to clog a sewer line ,only if your sewer line does not have a good level towards the city drain or a broken pipe or a faulty backwater valve would you clog a drain with toilet paper.
  6. If the pipes are clear it should be no problem. But I would recommend single ply tissue, not he soft fluffy kind, especially if you have a septic system. Single ply breaks down quicker and easier.
