Sewers

Who's Responsible? The grease trap at my work has been clogged for months- causing noxious sewer gas!?

I realized that my headaches started about the same time the sewage smell started, as did my dizzy spells. Other coworkers had similar complaints, some even stranger problems. The problem was drastic enough to make ppl stop eating there for a while. It's fixed now and my headaches are clearing up. Too coincidental. Is there any way this can all be connected??? Apparently the owner has a contract with the city and the city is supposed to have the trap cleaned out regularly. It hasn't been done for a long time. It's been going on since last summer and getting far worse when we'd move air (a/c and heat). We had ppl in and out trying to figure out what was happening. We thought it was connected to the new town sewer project, or maybe a dry trap. The smell was so bad at times the restaurant cleared out. There were days I was physically ill. We all complained to the mayor, but all he ever did was point fingers. Needless to say, we were pretty mad when we found out it was the trap that the city was supposed to take care of.

  1. Grease traps are the worst smelling thing on earth. It is the responsibility of the owner to regularly clean it according to health law. The owner may clean it by tasking employees. If it is just left then it will only get worse and potentially harmful to humans. Clean it!
  2. it's very likely... "Unusual odors should never be ignored. Such odors are often an indication that sewer gas is present. Sewer gas, while not always deadly, is noxious and capable of causing headaches and other minor illnesses." http://www.theplumbingdr.com/plumbing.html
  3. the manager. call the health dept, anonymously. pour bleach in slow drains. let it sit awhile.
