Sewers

What eats grease in sewer pipes?

We have snaked it 3 times within hours and still clogged. Pieces of grease come out about 1 inch thick. We really need help. THIS IS RENTAL PROPERTY. THEY MOVED AND DID NOT LET US KNOW THERE WAS A PROBLEM. THEY HAD LIVED THERE ABOUT 7 MONTHS.

  1. Nothing. You may have to hire a professional. Coagulated grease will have to be removed and dumped.
  2. where is the grease coming from? are you pouring it in the drain?
  3. if its a root problem use copper salfate pour in your clean out
  4. Debbie, some products like RID EX will eat grease, but nothing like what you are describing. If you have 1 inch thick pieces coming out, you have more than the normal situation. Your normal bacteria eating solvents/chemicals will take out daily accumulations to prevent a situation from developing. The only thing you can do at this point, with what you describe, is to call in a professional plumber with a power snake and clean it all out. I would also suggest looking at what is being dumped in your drains to create anything that thick. Good luck and I do hope this helps you.
  5. You should have the line(s) cleaned out with a high-pressure water-jet type of drain cleaner. A professional plumber would be the one who will need to do this. This method would blast the grease off of the inside of the pipes and flush it away, using hi-pressure hot water. Enzymes will help maintain the pipes after the cleaning, but it needs to be cleaned first.
  6. You need the line augered, not snaked. An auger has attachments to clean the sides of the pipes. A snake merely makes a small hole that will seal back up.
  7. let the hot water run while snaking and keep on snaking till it clears
