Soooooo, why does my bathroom sink smell like a sewer?
I replaced my bathroom sink about 4 months ago and over the last few weeks there is a very bad odor coming from the sink. The water runs off great so it's not clogged with gunk.

- When replacing the sink did you replace the P trap as well, or even forget to re-install it? Did you remove and replace any of the drainage pipes below the sink? Somehow you have compromised your trap. Your trap serves to hold water in its weir to prevent sewer gases from flowing into the house. It is a very dangerous situation since these gases are very explosive. Call a plumber to have this situation reviewed and repaired as soon as possible.
- Building Inspector has it right. The P-trap under your sink acts like a water barrier and prevents the sewer gas from backing up into your bathroom.
- It sounds like you didn't replace the trap correctly, sewer gas is not being blocked by a water seal.
- check your trap for a leak even a piece of floss will act like wicking and slowly drain your trap.... and don't worry you will never have enough fumes to create any kind of explosion so don't get that in your head it's just a nuisance not a hazard
