Sewers

What would you install and where to prevent a sewage back up in your home?

We've had problems where sewage has backed up through our basement toilet. The problem is caused by the city sewer system being clogged with debris and we are located at a low spot. What do you suggest we install (be specific please) to prevent this problem?

  1. There are back-flow preventers on the market. some are like a short piece of 4" pipe with a large plastic ball inside..It allows flow out but rolls back to stop back flow.I've used one that has a flapper in it..It was from s Menard's store..Depending on how your drainage system is set up..You may need to break the floor beyond any drains..& this isn't hard to do..You can rent a concrete saw if needed.
  2. I bet your own sewer management folks can tell you exactly what to use and how to use it. The ball-type thingy is like an upside down T, with the crossbar inserted in the sewer line outside your house, and the ball in the stem of the T. Most often there is a hood over it to keep stuff from falling in and interfering with the action. The top of the stem wants to be at a lower elevation than that of the top of the lowest fixture or drain in the house. If a floor drain is below where the thingy is, it might be best to block off that drain, opening it only when you need it.
