septic system?
How do I find the distribution box in my septic system?

- Some people use a rod and probe for it. Maybe a little digging to follow the pipe.
- GOOD LUCK !!! I can only say this about that...If you can locate the exit pipe inside measure from an exterior wall so you can then locate it again outside. In most areas the tank must be a minimum of 10 feet from the house and are usually located there or as close as possible. You can also check your sewer pipe height and that will give you a hint as to depth...pipes have a slope of approx. 1/2" per 10 ft. You may well see an area that is different from the surrounding area...grass grows faster or snow melts faster etc...depending on the tank you should have 2 cleanout openings on top spaced 4' to 6' apart..once you find it measure to the openings from 2 or more spots on the house and record for future use ( I put a map beside the electrical entry so it's easy to find)
- A question that I am dealing with right now as well. I am going to use one of my excavators and carefully work my way from the tank by finding one part of the line & them moving some in a linear fashon until I find it.
- the people who installed the septic usually have to map it out and give this map to your local health dept ,they keep them on record
- Check with your county health department. Many of them require drawings before they issue the septic permit, hopefully they will have yours on file.
- A metal detector. The septic has a iron handle that is the rod same as use in concrete walls.
