What's the protocol to fill or remove an unused sewer system in LA - St. Martin Parish?
We live in St. Martin Parish in Louisiana and we have an old, unused sewer system on our property. It's basically a large tire-size (in diameter) hole in the ground with a flimsy, rusted cover that's not secured and has holes rusted through it. There's no telling what's in there; we'd love to just fill the hole and call it a day but something tells me that's not proper protocol. Does anyone know how to handle this? Who would I contact? My water company is too small to even have a website and they never answer their phone. Help! All suggestions/ideas/comments welcome.

- As a fellow Louisianian, albeit in St. Tammany Parish, I would fill it up. If is a very very old, like outhouse old, hole, dig it up and find treasures from pre indoor plumbing. If on the slim chance somebody in the next hundred years asks what happened to the sewer, just say, "What sewer?" It' s public nuisance the way it is. Someone could fall in it, die and the relatives would sue you. You know litigious Louisiana is. Fill it up.
- in Ohio if you have an unused septic tank or cesspool you have to have it pumped then crushed or filled to capacity with crushed #57 gravel contact your local heath department or plumbing department
