Sewers

Has any one had any experiences with "community" sewer systems?

I am buying a new house and it has one, just wondering if it is good or bad, or how does it work?

  1. Community sewer systems are all that I have ever known, living near Chicago all my life. Seriously, I think septic tanks are so weird. Anyway, what do you want to know? I have never had a problem...the stuff goes down and it never comes back and I never have to see it again and I never have to have it pumped or whatever the "septics" have to have done.
  2. .I'm uncertain as to what community means in your particular instance..Perhaps it is a rather small development..where a municipal sewage system isn't available..In these types of developments, all units included share in the upkeep & repair of the shared facility..I would find out for certain, before closing.
  3. It can vary a good bit. One key factor is how is it financed and who has control. We live in the suburbs of large city for over 20 years and we had a local utility district that provided water and sewer service. The district was owned by our subdivision and controlled by our subdivision. There were utility bonds that covered the capital costs and we paid monthly for the other costs. It works very well. I have heard of other systems that are not owned and controlled by the users and the results can be good to very very poor. If the users own and have control it is more likely to be satisfactory. Otherwise it is a crap shoot.
