Soft Soil Around New Septic System?
We have recently been looking into buying a home and came across an older home that we liked a lot. We know that there was a new septic system installed about 6 months ago and the ground above the new system is still soft (not muddy). Since the system is new, it seems unlikely to be a failure. Any ideas on why the ground would still be so soft? It has been an average winter here in terms of moisture. My main concern is the foundation (crawl space). Thanks in advance.

- takes a while for the soil to compact expecially in winter
- May be the soil just hasn't settled yet. You don't want to be driving heavy equipment over the leach field to squish out the pore spaces between the soil particles. I doubt the leach field is closer than 20 feet to your house foundation, so I'm pretty sure you are safe there. Be sure to get a home inspection....not paid for by the homeowner, but you pay for so they represent you! Ask specifically about the soft soil.
