Sewers

I have sewer gas coming back up through my toilet. The water drains out of the toilet after being flushed.?

  1. I would check the vent pipe and make sure it's not plugged up.
  2. If the water is seeping out the bottom of the toilet at the floor after flushing, you need to replace the seal there. There is a rubber seal that fits between the toilet bottom and the floor. Shut off the water, bail as much as possible from the toilet, unbolt it from the floor and set it aside. You will see the seal when you move the toilet. These seals need to be replaced occasionally. It's not a difficult task, but if you are uncomfortable doing this, call a plumber or a handyman.
  3. If the toilet is draining completely then there is a problem with the trap. When you flush does the water circle the bowl. If should. Wait for a couple of minutes and then check, Is there water in the bowl? No, pour some in. If it stays in the bowl then it's the air vent it's not letting enough air into the system and when you flush the suction is empting the bowl. If the water you pour into the bowl drains away then you have a crack (leak) in the trap. Let us know what happens
