- If this is a serious question....NYC has a somewhat older system of brick lined tunnels for waste water and raw sewage.. They are gravity fed to lift stations that force them into large clarification plants where grinders and dig-esters aerate the material constantly until the bacterial action has removed as much as 90% of the toxins they are then neutralized for ph and tested for choliform bacteria and are sent into tributary locations with the EPA stamp of approval there ya go from theE
