Sewers

When I take a shower upstairs and toilet(sewer)water from the same bathroom comes up through the kitchen sink.

Where should I snake the drain?Downstairs in the kitchen or upstairs in the bathroom under the toilet.I'm not sure were the clog is to make the upstairs toilet water come through the kitchen sink downstairs, but only when I take a shower upstairs.PLEASE HELP ME!!!

  1. Snake the drain line that the kitchen drain ties into. You have a restriction in that line. Your problem is not upstairs.
  2. Check out the drains below the kitchen..There should be a clean-out plug, where the main sewer leaves the house..the flow from the house to the street sewer may be restricted, decay, roots & etec..Start at that clean out plug..If there's water there, you might try snaking it out..It will probably be 75 to 110' to the main in the street. For $100 Roto-Rooter will do it. If its roots or decay..snaking it out will just be a temporary solution. I could put in a new 4" PVC to the street main for $3000.
  3. Try a drain cleaner first, cheapest and easy. Larger hardware stores sells drain cleanner that you flush down the toilet. They also sell cans of compress air to push the clog out. Try this stuff first, easy and cheap.
