what will help Major serious septic system problems?
We are desperate! Our septic system (which is rather old) has not been functioning very well for a month or two. We had someone come out and drain the system, completely, but only a few days later and it's gotten so bad we cannot even use the water to shower. Before we spend thousands for a new one, does anyone know of a product on the market that actually works? They all claim to, but we'd like to hear it from someone who actually used it and got results. Please help! I need a shower! Thanks.

- It's not clear from your message what the problem is. I don't know what you mean when you say you had someone "drain the system completely." If they emptied the tanks, then you should have been okay for a while until the tanks were full. You say "it's gotten so bad," but you don't say what you are experiencing. Is the water backing up? Is there a horrible odor? Please post more details. Products that claim to "fix" septic issues are a waste of money. They are just a box full of bacteria, and there is plenty of bacteria in what you put down the drains already. In many cases these products upset the balance of the system to the point where it is ruined. If you have a very old septic sytem with a drainage field, the field itself could be clogged. Especially if the tank(s) have not been cleaned out on a regular basis, solids which are not meant to be there can get into the drainage pipes and cause them to malfunction. If this is the case you will need someone who knows what they are doing to investigate the issue and maybe repair part of your septic field, re-lay tiles, etc. There really is no shortcut when a septic system fails.
- I totally agree with the answer from "65% water". Our old septic system started doing the same thing. Ours would back up and come up through the shower drain, and being from the city where I had city plumbing, this part made me sick at my stomach. After having the system pumped out several times, and after using Rid X, plain old yeast, and many other useless products on the market today, we finally were advised that our drain field was totally saturated and we needed a whole new system. Our system was over 45 years old and used a metal tank. We replaced with 2 larger cement tanks and a new drain field and have had no problems since. My husband always told me not to flush toilet paper down the toilet because it was harder to "digest." I had many people tell me not to worry that it was okay to flush paper. Well, the last guy who pumped out our tanks said there was a whole lot of paper floating around. And I use Rix X faithfully once a month. So, I agree with hubby - Don't flush your paper.
