What is the average size of a septic system (gallons)?

I am trying to find what the average size/capacity of a residential septic system in gallons. From what I have found in my research it is in the 1500 to 1600 gallon range; is that correct? Please reference your answer (i.e. experience, knowledge, answer location, etc.) Thanks!

  1. The size of the tank depends on how many bedrooms the house has. The more bedrooms, the bigger the tank.
  2. tank size is matched with house size and the load it must handle http://www.inspect-ny.com/septic/tanksize.htm http://www.laundry-alternative.com/septic_tank_size
  3. ~*~The size of a septic system is based on the size of the household that will be using it. A typical tank for the US average family of four would have a liquid capacity of 1,500 gallons.
  4. You are in the ball park on size. When you contact your plumber, he will know how big to go for your area. There are a lot of variables, but this web site should help you in your decision. It will give you the size tank you need compared to your water usage per day. http://www.inspect-ny.com/septic/tanksize.htm
  5. To some extent it depends on where the waste goes after the septic tank. If it goes to a field, you need a little more processing time so a double tank with 750 gal in the first compartment and 1000 in the second is good for a family of 6. If you have a bell & siphon or pump system discharging into a bush patch then you can go smaller. We have a 750/1000 tank with a Bell & Siphon and our house is usually full of friends, relations, neighbours, kids, grandkids and assorted hangers on -- estimated over 50 flushes per day + laundry and dishwasher. After 25 years it's still working fine. I hope this helps. -- Oh, we're located in NE Alberta, Canada on a farm with light, well-drained soil.
