What type of septic system do I need?

I have a lot that is a half an acre with a home being built that is around 2350 sq. feet with 4 bed and 2 1/2 bath. I know nothing about this stuff and am going to be calling around tomorrow but I was just wondering what to expect. I believe it will be around 6 to 10k to have one put in here in san antonio but what kind of septic am I going to need?

  1. Your soil conditions will have a lot to do with what kind of system you will need. The number of bed rooms is typically a key that is used by the designer to determine the size. In Texas the system must be designed by a certified designer and installed by a certified contractor. If you have real sandy soil, you be able to use a contventional system with a leech bed. If it has a lot of clay then you may have to have an aerobic system. Our septic system in East Texas that was installed in 1996, cost about $4,000. I would guess the same system today would cost about $6,000. We have a lot of clay so our system is aerobic.
  2. Depends on the area codes. In Florida, they sized the septic by the number of bedrooms. 4 bedroom home needed a 1200 gallon tank. Another thing they will probably do is test the soil for percolation. This will decide what type system you need. If the perc test is good, you will not need a "mound" system, which is more expensive.
