Why do new SOS pads smell like sewer gas?

SOS pads smell like sewer gas. Why is this?

1. Why are you sniffing the pads and the sewers so closely as to recognize the similarities so well?
2. ewww. I know, right?? gross!!
3. It masks the odor of rancid pan grease.
