Sewers

If I cut a tree down that is clogging my sewer line...?

will the roots continue to grow?

  1. Roots of a tree can remain alive for some time, as part of their function is as energy storage, and many trees will re-sprout shoots, for above ground growth. This mainly depends on the type of tree that's growing, so it's worthwhile editing your question with the species, if you know it - or you could post photos. Some tree roots take years to decay, so if your line is blocked, it could well be worth clearing it. (Had a similar problem with invasive roots, so my sympathy's with you). Obviously it's easier, and cheaper, said than done. Ultimately if a tree is not allowed to regrow and photosynthesise, its roots will eventually give up and the tree will die - it's worth not underestimating the endurance that some species have though. Eucalyptus roots, for example, can take some years to decay properly, due to the amount of resin that this tree species makes. Overall, a trees roots grow to support the above ground growth - if there is less above, it doesn't need to continue to develop its root network as much as it would if its above ground growth had continued to expand. Thus a harshly hacked tree will not develop its roots to the same extent that a lush massive tree will. Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
  2. Conifers(needles) No. Deciduous and Broad Leaf Evergreens(leaves) Yes
  3. No - but the roots (dead or alive) which are already invading your lines will still be there . Rotor-Rooter time !!
