If you buy home with septic will it have permit from health dept?o?
I want to purchase an old home with existing septic-back 30 or 40 yrs ago did the health dept give permits for these and would I need a new one before I move in ? I want to move in after I buy it and start other renovations (like electric) and I know eventually I will hook up to local water/sewer system( which is now available) but I need 5 months to access all the cash...(in Pa) Does any one know how this works??

- You may have to get an inspection of the septic, but it depends on the county.
- The septic tank may or may not be grandfathered in. Home sale is often the trigger for forcing such upgrades. You need to see what the local regulations are and prioritize your improvements to accomodate them. In fact, the upgrade shortfalls could cause the bank to refuse a loan at all. Better do your homework.
- The old septics are usually always grandfathered in. If I was concerned, I would just make sure that the home has a certificate of occupancy. That long ago record keeping was very casual so hope this helps.
