Can I have the area around a mound septic system filled to "flatten" the mound and make it less noticeable?

I have a mound septic system in my backyard. I live on a hill, where my backyard slopes from back right corner down to front right corner. Currently our mound septic sits on the highest of 3 plateaus that we have. I was hoping to move some dirt around to make the mound less noticeable. Is this ok to do, or do you need the full "mound" effect for the system to function properly. Thanks for all help.

  1. You can fill in around the mound. The purpose of the mound is to create the needed depth of suitable soil above the natural soil that has been determined to be unsuitable because of its high percolation rate, high groundwater, bedrock or other limiting factor. There is a minimum depth needed of a suitable soil, so a mound of that kind of soil is made over the top. The fact that the result is a "mound" has nothing to do with the performance.
  2. Gota give it to roadie! Good answer! Yeah go ahead and fill er up! It wont make a difference!
